NYS Sheep & Wool Festival
People “flock” from all over the country and as far away as Australia and Europe to attend the annual New York State Sheep and Wool Festival held in October at the bucolic Dutchess County Fairgrounds. Attendees include knitters, crocheters, hand spinners and growers of natural-fiber-producing livestock. Although you will find many people who have no interest in the wool and fiber industry who come to the one of the Northeast’s truly unique events.
Over 300 wool & fiber arts and vendors of materials and tools associated with all things wool make up the show. Natural fiber producing livestock such as angora rabbits, llamas & alpacas, musk oxen and many different breeds of sheep and goats are showcased. In addition to the myriads of vendors and demonstrations/workshops of fiber arts activities, the festival features several livestock competitions, a “Make it with Wool” fashion show, a photo contest and a Fleece Show and Sale. Sheep dog herding and frisbee dog demonstrations are held throughout the day. A variety of food concessions offer their usual menu but also offer a special dish that contains lamb. There’s something for every food palate. Festival goers can graze their way through the winery, distillery and gourmet specialty foods building. Maple syrup cotton candy and cider apple donuts are by far festival favorites!
